All RHA Housing is Smoke Free

Why?

RHA has paired with Seattle and King County Public Health, as well as Seattle Children's Hospital in an effort to go smoke free. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has suggested that for the positive health benefits of all residents, housing authorities should be moving towards making all housing smoke free. Part of our main goal as a Housing Authority has always been to provide a safe environment for those in our residency, going smoke free makes sense.

Before any of this got started we surveyed and polled the residents. We wanted to find out what the general consensus was about going smoke free. The results were overwhelmingly positive. About 80% of residents said that they would benefit from a smoke free policy.

As of June 1st 2014, all of our properties are smoke free.

What does a smoke-free policy mean for smokers?

Smoke free is different for all of the Housing Authorities and other agencies that have gone smoke free. We used other Housing Authorities smoke free policies and resources from the state and HUD to come up with an effective policy for our residents.

Our policy is a 25 foot rule. Smoking will not be allowed inside of or on patios. Smoking is permitted outside only if further than 25 feet from any doors, windows or air intake. You can review the details of our policy here.
