Tasked
with building homes to support the middle and low-income workers amassed
for the US engagement in World War II, the Housing Authority of the City
of Renton formed in 1941 and created 5,000 dwellings in close proximity
to the Boeing B-29 and PACAR Sherman Tank manufacturing lines.
Under the
federal Lanham National Housing for Defense Act the cost per unit was
capped at $3,000.
In the 1950s most of these affordable units, many of which stand today,
were sold to the defense personnel for whom the housing was constructed.
RHA then in 1959 constructed Sunset Terrace on the existing
infrastructure.
October 17, 2011 marked the
genesis of the Glennwood Townhomes: a federal, county, and locally
funded endeavor emblematic of Renton’s future and so essential to its
Sunset Terrace families and their children.
Members of RHA’s team include Joel Ing and Len Brannen of Shelter
Resources Incorporated. Joel drafted the applications to King County,
the City, and the Washington Community Reinvestment Association to
secure funding for the townhomes. Jackie McLean and Cheryl Markham from
the County were there to accept our heartfelt thanks as well as Dulcie
Claassen and Susan Duren from WCRA. Guy Peckham of Bumgardner Architects
designed and drew the eight homes.
Following a rigorous selection process Darrell Barnes and Construction
Enterprises & Contractors (CE&C) have been selected to build the
Glennwood Townhomes.
The City of Renton’s housing authority is proud to deliver these units
with the support of the community, SRI, Bumgardner, CE&C, the County,
WCRA, City staff, and elected officials.
